Every year, nearly 4.7 million people are bitten by dogs and about 800,000, half of them children, seek medical attention, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The purpose of this program is to alert residents to menacing dogs in their neighborhood in order to protect themselves, their children and their pets. Dogs can be declared menacing and placed on the registry after one biting incident. However, each incident is reviewed to ensure fairness in placing dogs on the registry. If it can be determined that the incident was perpetrated by someone teasing a dog or trespassing on the dog owner's property, the dog may not qualify as menacing. The dog is not removed from the registry until it dies or the owners move out of the community. Dog owners are sent a letter advising them that their pet has been placed on the registry.

The information provided here is based solely on an Addison Police report. After 18 months, the Addison Police Department will attempt to verify that the dog still resides at that location.
