The Speed Monitoring Awareness Radar Trailer (SMART) is a portable, self-contained speed display unit that is towed to sites experiencing speed-related problems. A specially designed radar is mounted inside the locked trailer, clocking speeds. This allows motorists to see their speed displayed on a highly visible LED (light emitting diode) display. The speed limit sign above the display reminds the motorists to pay attention to the posted speed limit. As speed awareness increases, motorists, in turn, will slow down, even after the unit is moved to a different location. With fewer speed-related accidents, officer's time is freed up and they can concentrate their efforts in other areas. Additionally, residents feel safer, which is one of the goals in providing this educational tool. Contact the Traffic Safety Unit at (630) 543-3080 to request a SMART trailer in your neighborhood.
